Your October Guide to Getting Ahead

The holidays have a way of sneaking up on us.

One minute it’s October, and the next, the calendar is full, the house is busy, and there’s nowhere to put the extra stuff that comes with the season.

October is your opportunity to get ahead before the overwhelm sets in. A little organization now can create the space, systems, and breathing room you’ll appreciate when the holidays are in full swing. Think less about doing a massive clean out and more about making your home ready for what’s creeping around the corner.

Here's what I'm thinking about this October:

Get Your Home Ready for the Busy Season

Before the holiday rush begins, take a look at the everyday systems in your home. As the days get shorter and life starts moving indoors, small areas that worked just fine in the summer can suddenly feel a little less functional.

Think: an accessible spot for blankets that doesn’t turn into a pile, a coat and bag landing zone that keeps entryway chaos contained as layers come back, or simply clearing the surfaces where you unwind at the end of the day.

The goal isn’t to make your home perfect. It’s to make it easier to live in now and even easier to manage when the busy season arrives.

Your Fall Decluttering Checklist

If you want to get ahead before the holiday rush hits, here’s where I’d start:

  • Entryway: Clear out summer shoes, sunscreen, and beach bags. Set up a spot for coats, scarves, and gloves before you need them.

  • Closets: Pull anything you didn't wear all summer and be honest about whether it's earned a spot for next year.

  • Kitchen counters: Relocate anything that migrated there over the summer back to its actual home.

  • Linens: Swap in heavier blankets and flannel sheets, and box up the lightweight ones you won't need again until spring.

  • Kids' gear: Sort through summer toys and outdoor equipment before winter clothes and gear need that same storage space.

  • Entry table or drop zone: Reset it completely. This is the space that collects the most chaos as routines shift.

Remember: You don't need to tackle this all in one weekend. Pick one category, start there, and let the rest follow when you're ready.

Use Halloween as a Test Run for Holiday Storage

Halloween is a great time to prepare for the bigger holiday storage shuffle. With Christmas and other holiday decor likely to take up more space, Halloween gives you a smaller-scale opportunity to figure out what works before the volume increases.

As you put away your Halloween decorations, use the process to create a system you can carry into the rest of the season. Notice what you reach for most, what needs to be grouped together, and where you naturally want to store it. A little planning now can make the next round of decorating and storing much easier.

Your Halloween Decor Transition Checklist:

  • Sort before you store. Separate what you actually used and loved this year from what stayed packed away. If you didn’t use it, consider whether it needs to come back out next year.

  • Group by type, not by chaos. Keep lights with lights, stakes and yard decor together, and costumes separate from decorations.

  • Choose one dedicated bin or zone. Give Halloween a clear home so everything can go back to the same place each year.

  • Label it clearly. A simple “Halloween” label saves time when you’re searching for decorations next fall.

  • Place it with intention. Store it somewhere accessible enough for next year without taking up prime everyday storage space.

  • Do a quick damage check. Toss anything broken or unusable now, while you

    remember what needs replacing.

Think of Halloween as your practice round. Once you have a system that works for one season, you can use what you learned when the bigger holiday storage shuffle begins.

BONUS: if you already keep your Halloween candy and holiday sweets in one bin stored up high, out of easy reach for little hands, you're ahead of the game. It's such a simple move, but heading into a season with treats coming from every direction, it's a genuinely smart one. One designated, elevated spot means less mindless grazing, easier portion control for kiddos, and one less thing cluttering your counters or pantry shelves during the busiest eating season of the year. If you're not doing this yet, it's an easy one to add before the candy bowls start multiplying!
